AN CÚRSA Coláiste U.I.S.C.E. is the only Irish College of its kind in Ireland and is approved by the Department of Education, Roinn Na Gaeltachta, the Irish Sailing Association and the Irish Canoe Union. Mixing adventure sports with Gaeilge is a new, exciting and extremely successful way of learning Irish. Making Irish fun is the motto of the Coláiste whose native speaking and qualified instructors are always there to help students get their tongues around those difficult 'ach' sounding words. The teaching media of sailing, windsurfing, swimming, orienteering, canoeing and surfing take Irish out of the classroom and give children a new perspective of the language. In this way Irish itself is being developed by being associated with modern, exciting adventure sports. Student numbers are limited per course due to the maintenance of an 8:1 maximum pupil/instructor ratio. This results in more personal attention for individual students during Irish classes, and consequently higher standards of Irish are achieved during the course. The incentive for students to learn also exists because not only do they return from the Gaeltacht speaking Irish naturally but they also have achieved Level 1 competency and qualifications in various sports. Outdoors the experienced instructors teach the children to put into practice what they have learnt in the class. This clear sense of purpose to learning Irish achieves dramatic results for children and changes their whole attitude to speaking 'As Gaeilge".
